Trip Overview

Tamang Heritage Trail is a newly developed route in the Langtang region which showcases the lifestyle and culture of local Tamang inhabitants. As the trail leads to Tibet, the ancestors of the Tamang locals are said to have come from Kerung, Tibet in Nepal for trade and settled themselves in Nepal by changing their ethnicity to Tamang for gaining Nepalese citizenship identity.

Walking in this untouched and unspoiled off the beaten track, you will have a chance to witness the astonishing beauty of terraced farmland, peaceful villages, rhododendron forests, and the magnificent Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himalayas.

Itinerary


Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

Welcome to Kathmandu. You will be received by one of our office representatives at the TIA exit section and escort you to your hotel afterward.

Depending on your arrival time, you will have the chance to stroll around the places nearby your hotel on your own.

Day 02: Permits preparation and trip briefing day.

Today you will have a free day in Kathmandu while your specialist will take time to arrange permits for your trek. You will have time to explore around the Kathmandu valley on your own or enjoy the cultural tour with an experienced tour guide arranged by Trek Guiders.

In the evening, you will be met by your specialist in your hotel lobby. S/he will introduce you to your guide for the trek and brief you shortly about your trek, things to do/ not to do, and any optional activities you may enjoy during the trip. You can ask any queries or share feelings with your specialist during the briefing.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Besi (1460m)

From Kathmandu, it’s approximately an 8 -hours scenic drive to Syabru Besi. After driving for 130 km, you will approach an untouched village on the bank of the Trishuli river. Enjoying the great views of the Himalayas, including the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and the peaks of the Langtang region, stay overnight at Syabrubesi.

Day 04: Trek from Syabru Besi to Gatlang (2238m).

Syabrubesi is the starting point of most Langtang Valley treks. Taking the west route from Syabrubesi for this trail, you will start with a steady climb towards the viewpoint from where you will enjoy the panoramic views of Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung. Then you will descend down towards Goljung village for about one hour where you will have your lunch. After few time rest, continue trekking towards a small Tamang village named Gatlang which is located on a hillside.

Day 05: Trek from Gatlang to Tatopani (2380m).

After breakfast, start with a descend towards Thangbuche near to Chilime village. Passing by the Chilima Hydropower dam situated by the Bhotekoshi River, cross the hanging steel bridge and ascend towards Tatopani. The village is named after the hot spring which naturally occurred there. There are numerous towns of similar names in the Annapurna region too where natural hot springs are found. But here in Langtang, the hot springs are no longer there after the devastating earthquake of 2015.

Day 06: Trek from Tatopani to Thuman (2238m).

Today, the trail passes through dense forest until you reach a small Tamang settlement of Brimdang. From here you will walk uphill for few hours until Nagthali which is at the height of 3165m and is the highest pass of the area. From here, the view of Langtang Lirung, Kerung, Ganesh Himal and Sanjen Range looks magnificent.

Descend gradually to another traditional village of Thuman which is influenced by Tibetan culture. You may encounter large troops of Gray Langoor Monkeys too if you got lucky. Upon reaching Thuman, have some rest and take some time to interact with friendly villagers.

Day 07: Trek from Thuman to Briddim (2240m)

Today you will walk towards Briddim from Thuman. Firstly, the trail descends towards Timure which follows a part of the old salt trade route to Tibet. From Timure, Tibet is just three hours walk. If you wish to visit the border at Rasuwagadhi, an overnight stay can be arranged at Timure ultimately adding one more trekking day in the plan. Enjoy Nepali lunch at Timure.

After lunch, the trail descends down to another Tamang village of Briddim. Briddim is a Buddhist village influenced by Tibetan culture and is inhabited by people of Tibetan origin. Here you will see the houses mostly made up of stone with roofs of split shake. Take some time to explore a monastery called Dukchu Monastery too.

Day 08: Trek from Briddim to Syabrubesi.

Following the Bhotekoshi River, trek back to Syabrubesi passing through paddy and cornfields. After lunch, explore this small village and take some rest. In the evening, you can explore the local shops here and purchase local handicrafts goods if you like.

Day 09: Drive from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu.

After breakfast, drive back the same route to Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, check in to your hotel. Rest of the day is free.

Day 10: Departure day.

You will be picked up from your hotel 3.5 hours prior to your international flight time by one of our office representatives to escort you to the TIA. Trip concludes !!

Commencing this trip

The trail starts from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi with a long drive. From Syabrubesi the route starts opposit to the trail that leads to Langtang valley and Gosaikunda. Walking a remote path, which is mostly off the beaten, trekkers will get to experience and see the untouched and unspoiled part of Langtang and Ganesh Himal area. The villages here are mostly inhabited by Tamang people where Tibetan influence is mostly seen. Witnessing the antique culture, remoteness, and rural lifestyle, you will visit numerous villages before getting back to Syabrubesi again from where you will return back to Kathmandu retracing the same highway.

Best time to do this trip

The trail is mostly covered with a lush forest of rhododendron, alpine terrain landscapes, and flat meadows. The trip is best to undertake on either Spring or Autumn but to be specific, as Rhododendron Forest is on full bloom during March and April, trekking during Springtime can be more rewarding.

Important points to be noted:


  • The mentioned trip price is per person price quoted for an open trek* based on 5 travelers group. The trip price will vary depending on the final size of the group. The trip price for a customized private trip arrangement may alter.

  • The Single Room Supplement charge will be USD 90.00 net for the traveler willing to use a single room for 3 nights stay in Kathmandu Hotel.

  • Single rooms will not be available in the tea houses during the trek due to the limited number of lodges on the trail.

  • An assistant trek guide will be provided to the group above 5 travelers.

Open trek refers to the trek opened for all interested travelers from around the world to join.
